FINKI LIFE — Open-Source and Third-Party Notices

This document carries the notices FINKI LIFE is obliged to give for the third-party work it distributes, and the rights the operator reserves in its own. It forms part of the Terms of Service.

1. Where the licences are

FINKI LIFE ships an Open-source licenses screen, reachable from the app's menu. It reproduces the copyright notice and the full licence text of every third-party package the app is built from, and of everything those packages depend on in turn. That screen is the notice; this document adds only what does not appear there.

2. Notices that are not in that screen

OpenStreetMap. Three of the files the app ships are databases derived from OpenStreetMap, and are licensed under the Open Database Licence (ODbL 1.0) rather than under this project's own licence:

ODbL asks two different things of two different uses, and this app makes both. The map a student looks at is a Produced Work, for which attribution is enough: the app displays "© OpenStreetMap contributors" in the map view. The three files themselves are a Derivative Database, and shipping a database carries share-alike as well as attribution. They are therefore offered under ODbL 1.0: they are excluded from the proprietary claim in section 3 and from the licence that ships with the app, and anyone who receives the app receives those three files under ODbL and may redistribute them under it.

The timer sounds are generated, not licensed. The four .wav files in assets/pomodoro_sounds/, and the copy of one of them that Android plays as the focus-timer alarm, were produced by prompting an AI model (Kimi K3) rather than taken from a sound library or a recording. No third party holds rights in them and no attribution is owed. They are listed here because a reader is entitled to know that the audio the app ships is machine-generated.

FINKI and UKIM governing acts. assets/rulebook.json holds nine of the faculty's and the university's own acts — the rules on studying, the ethical code, the discipline rulebook, the fee schedule and others — so the assistant can answer a question about them with no connection. They are taken from finki-hub/documents (MIT, © Delemangi), a student-run project that converts the published PDFs to Markdown and records, for each one, the evidence that it is still in force. Only the student-relevant slice is carried; the rest of that corpus — national laws, self-evaluation reports, salary tables — is not.

The acts themselves are official documents of FINKI and UKIM, published by them, and each passage the app shows names the act it came from and links to the faculty's own copy. Where the corpus could not establish that an act is still in force, the app says so rather than stating the rule as fact.

boring-avatars. A student's avatar is drawn at runtime from their own name by an original implementation of the method published in boring-avatars (MIT, © Boring Designers), reproducing its formulas and default palette. No picture is shipped and no upstream code is carried, and this notice is given for the work the method comes from.

Apache-2.0 NOTICE. One component in the dependency graph, quiver, ships a NOTICE file, which Apache-2.0 § 4(d) requires to be reproduced with any distribution:

3. FINKI LIFE itself is not open source

FINKI LIFE's source code, user interface, design, branding, original artwork, documentation, and original application data are proprietary. They are not licensed for reuse. This does not reach the three OpenStreetMap-derived data files named in section 2, which are ODbL 1.0 and cannot be proprietary.

Nothing in this document grants any right to copy, modify, publish, distribute, sublicense, sell, or create derivative works from FINKI LIFE's proprietary materials. This document only acknowledges rights that third-party licences already grant to everyone, including the operator.

4. Disclaimer regarding third-party components

Third-party components are supplied by their own authors under their own licences.

The operator is not the author of these components, does not control them, does not warrant them, and accepts no liability whatsoever arising from them — including for defects, vulnerabilities, data loss, licence non-conformity by an upstream author, or any change, deprecation, or withdrawal upstream. Each component is used as provided by its author, "as is", without warranty of any kind, as its own licence states.

Where a third-party licence disclaims warranty and liability, that disclaimer applies to the operator's distribution of the component as well. See sections 12 and 13 of the Terms of Service.

5. University names, marks, and public content

FINKI, UKIM, faculty, department, staff, and course names and any associated logos are the property of their respective holders. They appear only to describe publicly available academic information. FINKI LIFE is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or licensed by those institutions, and no trademark right is claimed or granted. Public news, announcements, timetable, and staff-directory content remain the property of the institution that published them and are shown under their own terms.

6. Reporting a notice problem

If a licence, copyright notice, or attribution is missing, wrong, or out of date, report it through the in-app bug report or email todorovski@todorx.dev. Correct notices matter and reports are acted on.
